Buffalo

Often seen in Hluhluwe sharing mud holes with rhino, Buffalo are always an impressive sight up close. This extremely mean looking animal is often confused with Water Buffalo. This is incorrect, our buffalo are known either as Cape Buffalo or African Buffalo. Very different to the water buffalo found in Asia.

Considered to be one of the big five because of their very aggressive nature when being hunted, these animals always fascinate me with their alertness and active minds. Unlike White Rhino who can look very unaware of you (in a vehicle) Buffalo let you know…that they know…. that you are there….if that makes sense.

I once read somewhere that they look at you as if you owe them money. Well I don’t know about that but they do look you directly in the eye, and it is quite apparent they don’t want you around.

Buffalo are fine if you are in a vehicle, but they are not an animal you want to meet when on foot. Many of the game guards and anti-poaching unit guys will tell you that’s the animal they fear most when patrolling on foot.
